Girl. God's got a sense of humor for sure. Thanks for sending me down the palliative care rabbit hole now (cause, you know, gotta try make myself feel productive while I watch the spiral continue...) Sending good thoughts your way.

Exotic & Firearms for sure. There was a time some eons ago, I wanted to be an FBI agent, but really a Mob hit-woman in the background (double undercover but backwards). And maybe at some point some kind of Ninja too.

Exotic I still dream about, especially destinations, sailing (with a crew of course) around the most exotic and hard to reach tropical destination in the world.

Not plans, more like dreams. And God still laughs...

Loving your work Jodi, thanks for sharing your stories.

Thanks. And you reminded me of a pirate story I grew up on…hmm. I hear another story brewing. 💕

You always provide me with things to both think and laugh about. I too have no clue what I'll be doing in five years. Will Mom be here still? Will I still have the energy I do now? Will I be approaching 'great-grandma-hood'? I dunno. :) Thanks as always for great info!

Holy fuck Jodi. This is such an excellent piece. Comical, tragic, informative. You could easily be a play writer, the best for all tragic comedies ever written.

I adore your style, whether there be overalls, red dresses, Footy pajamas …

Well done again!

OMG. I just made a pithy comment, and it disappeared. Fuck. Okay, let's see if I can recreate it. I can see you as a garbage collector. You'd look great in one of their jumpsuits, you bring your style to any game. You can't help it. And please, tell me you really fantasized about "cardiac arrest" murder when you were 7 or 8? "We love our little Jodi, we've always known she was precocious. So ahead of her time. We knew she'd hit it big." Ma proudly boasts. She loves you no matter what, I'd guess. I can't imagine you being too short to reach the pedals of the VW Bus, ever. I thought you were born tall. xo

Jodi, fantastic writing as always, and so many fascinating and harrowing stories in your life, including the ones you share in the comments! Grateful that you are alive to tell these tales, not to mention that the love and care you share with your mom is truly inspiring.

Oh yes, it was an honest to goodness plan. Keep in mind when I ran away from home at 11, I already had a job & housing secured and waiting for my arrival. As a matter of fact I was taller at 11 than I am now. I just have a tall personality now.😉

AT SEVEN???? You have a VERY tall personality. What was the job you secured at 11? Did I miss that? xo

I was in love with a boy who was 12. His grandmother owned a dude ranch, which is how I met him on whatever holiday weekend that is that starts the summer. I get Labor Day and Memorial Day confused. Anyway. When we got home, I called the granma owner, she remembered me, and I got myself hired on for the summer as a chambermaid and waitress in exchange for room and board and riding. I told her I was 16. She’d met me. She went for it. I was out the window the next day.

My parents caught up with me at Grand Central Station on line to buy my ticket to Poughkeepsie. The ranch was just a short drive from there in Clinton Corners.

Matthew, the love of my 11-year-old life, went on the be a successful artist, with a home in Paris and another in Haiti.

I thought I’d written about it somewhere, but I guess not, but I did find this when I Googled my name and Matthew. This is how much you can rely on AI. Not at all.

How did your parents know to find you at Grand Central? Try the screenshot again and text it to me? AI sucks. But you already know how I feel about that. You're amazing. 11 years old. What a storied life you've lead!

My cousin who helped me got cold feet shortly after I left and told his mom who told mine. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Gah. The Barbie Dream House, the object of my girlhood obsession. Love this one, Jodi--I hope you're planning a series with the rest of the alphabet--it could be an Encyclopedia of God laughs.

Ah, plans... I'm old enough to be cynical about planning: I believe it's helpful in the short term, but the what-do-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up type of long-term planning you're talking about? Out the door when I dreamed of being a dress designer. My third-grade teacher even had me read my essay about it to the class (pretty sure they had no idea what I was talking about). Reality hits, and plans go poof. But I do wish somewhere along the line I'd learned to write like you do❤

Jodi Sh. Doff's avatar

Oh jeepers, that has got to be one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. Thanks you! I always feel I'm not literary enough, not clever enough or informed enough, but I do like to talk...😉

And is God's laugh a melodious giggle? A booming bass-y throaty guffaw? An evil Disney villain cackle? Sometimes I wonder...

There's a laugh snort in there somewhere.

Jodi, I too dreamed of being a garbage collector, after all they got to hang on the back of a truck and got to go off the block. I also dreamed of becoming an elevator operator. I loved the big gears and they got to meet so many people, even though the only building I saw one in was only three stories high in small town Wisconsin

God laughs at my plans too!

I'm praying for you, Jodi. 🙏

God is not laughing at you, I think He loves what you are doing and how well you are taking care of your mother. Stay strong, doing good. You will be rewarded in the end.
